The world expo 2020 is hosted by Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Strating from 1st of October 2020 and will be continued till 31st of March 2022. It was supposed to be held last year but the pandemic spared none and lead to postponing of world expo. Back in 2013, Dubai won and was chosen as the host country for world expo 2020, BIE, Bureau International des Exposition, is a general assembly in Paris that had chosen Dubai as the host.
The idea behind this world expo is branding and marketing. Hence, given the moto “Connecting minds, Creating the future”. Mr. Raheem Al Hashimi is the managing director for this event. The previous expo was held in 2015 in Milan.
The expo this year will be covering three themes, mobility, opportunity and sustainability. Each one of these themeshave their own pavilion. The three pavilions are designed by Foster and Partners, AGI Architects and Grimshaw Architects respectively.
The whole expo is being held in Al Wasi, an area of 1083 acres, 438 hectares, the area is close to the southern part of Dubai. An American company, HOK, has worked on designing the master plan of the event infrastructure. The expo will be having three districts, each one of them has a unique theme. These three districts cover the subthemes of the expo. Safety of the visitors and employees have been kept in mind while designing as the venue consists of an isolation room, helicopter services, a few emergencies exit, emergency care room.
The opening ceremony for world expo 2020 will be held on 30th of September, 2020. Many famous personalities like Ellie Goulding, Lang Lang, Andrea Bocelli, Mohommed Abdu, Andra Day, Angelique Kidjo and many others. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai made the declaration news. More than 50 countries are going to be a part of this expo. Every country has already chosen a theme, out of the three presented in order to take part in the expo.
Talking about the theme in detail, the sustainable theme represents unique way of living with the nature. The key highlights in this theme are from Brazil, Netherland, Czech Republic, Singapore, UAE and Germany. In the mobility pavilion, on display is a lift that can carry around 160 people at once. In the opportunity pavilion, the main focus will be on employment.
The expo is sponsored by many partners in order to cover the little details like L’Oreal is going to be the beauty partner, Dulsco is the waste partner for expo 2020 and will be helping in organizing bus trips to spread awareness about recycling, CNN is going to be the broadcasting partner and will cover the complete expo, Cisco have presented themselves as the premier digital networking partner, Accenture on the other hand is going to be the digital service partner. DP world is representing to be the global trade partner.
There are many other firms like Mastercard, Nissan, G42, Etisalat, PepsiCo, SAP, Slemens, etc. who are sponsoring the world expo.
Although, the expo 2020 faced a serious blow of criticism but it is still happening, beating all the odds. Just a few weeks before the opening ceremony of Expo, The European parliament started withdrawing its support and also urged other countries to do the same.
They mentioned the cases of human rights violation in UAE, and asked its member states to withdraw their support and participation in the event. The UAE opposed the claims and stated that the charges are not even factually correct.
The expo this year is proposing to provide over 2 million jobs in the UAE which will further increase the economy by over $40 billion.
The Jumeriah Lake towers of Dubai are named as ‘Burj 2020’ due to the expo.
The entry in the expo requires tickets which are being sold in three ways. You can get yourself a day pass, a monthly pass or a seasonal pass.
The day pass can get you an entry for one day and costs around 95 AED. Whereas, a monthly pass can allow you to enter for a complete month and costs around 195 AED. Talking about the seasonal pass, it gives you entry for 6 months and will cost you 495 AED.
