Caroline Marie – From Brazil to Hollywood: My Journey as an Actress

In my career, I have had the chance to take on various roles, but one of the most unforgettable experiences was working with M. Night Shyamalan on “Glass”, which was filmed in Brazil, where I began my career after graduating from drama school.

I was born and raised by a Syrian-Lebanese mother and a French father. From the very beginning, I knew that I wanted to be an artist—someone whose work could deeply touch and resonate with others. I was particularly drawn to the transformative power of film, eager to make people laugh, cry, and experience the magic of storytelling.

Another standout project during my time in Brazil was my role in the HBO series “PSI”. I also appeared in other TV series like “Metropoles” and “The Heritage”, as well as several short films.

Working on “Glass” was a special moment, especially since only four Brazilian actors were involved in the production. My comedic timing stood out to the team. The production company, O2—Latin America’s largest studio—had been auditioning actresses in Brazil for weeks. At the time, I was living in Madrid, mostly working in commercials. My agency in Brazil kept urging me to come back for the in-person auditions, which were a requirement in 2018—no self-tapes allowed. All I knew was that the film would feature major Hollywood stars, but I had no further details. So, I booked a flight, flew back to Brazil, and auditioned in the final round of casting. To my amazement, I was offered the role.

Being part of such a small group of Brazilian actors meant we had rare opportunities to connect with M. Night Shyamalan, especially since we were all staying at the same hotel. I remember asking him why he chose me for the role, and he told me that my audition had made him “almost fall off his chair” from laughing. It was such a huge compliment, and I was thrilled when he explained that my comedic approach helped me stand out among hundreds of other auditions.

Once we finished filming, I returned to Madrid, where I signed with a British agent and decided to move to London, understanding that in order to truly develop an international career, I needed to immerse myself in an English-speaking market. London, with its vibrant energy, had also become a major hub for American productions in recent years, thanks to fewer union restrictions and appealing tax incentives. While in London, I had the opportunity to audition for major Netflix series and Warner Bros. films.

While living in London, I also took the opportunity to train in screen combat, which allowed me to develop martial arts skills specifically for film. This training led me to roles in three action films where I could showcase those abilities. I also found great joy in working on British comedies, particularly those with dry, sarcastic, and witty humor, a style I truly admire. London provided the perfect environment for me to push my limits and grow as an actor. Over the course of four years, I worked on several feature films, short films, and TV series, many of which are now available on Prime Video.

This phase of my career was incredibly fulfilling, both on a personal and professional level. I received two Best Actress awards for my performances in British films such as “Off His Job” and “The Magnificence of You”, both of which are available on Prime Video. “The Magnificence of You” alone won 13 awards. I was also part of an award-winning ensemble cast in “What the Fact”, which earned multiple accolades and is available on Prime Video. In 2021, I played a comedic role in “Cereal Man”, directed by Kai Ephron, which we filmed in Venice, Italy. Another significant project in the UK was “Love is Enough”, where I portrayed a woman hardened by life and a difficult marriage.

Besides being an actress, I am a trained horseback rider, ballet dancer, martial artist, and I speak five languages: Brazilian Portuguese, French, English, Spanish, and Italian. However, my most valuable asset is my ability to do comedy. Comedy is often regarded as one of the hardest genres to master, and it brings me true joy.

In terms of future projects, I’ll soon be starring in one that combines the spirit of “Emily in Paris” (Darren Star), “Fleabag” (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), “Girls” (Lena Dunham), and “Frances Ha” (Greta Gerwig), based on my own life experiences living across different countries. These creators are my role models—especially Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Lena Dunham, and Greta Gerwig—because, like them, I aspire to both act in and create my own work. Much like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon did with “Good Will Hunting”.

Although I had successes in Brazil, Madrid, and the UK, my ultimate ambition was always to make it to Hollywood, the heart of the global film industry. I recently relocated to Los Angeles, where I’ve been fortunate to work on a variety of projects, including feature films, short films, commercials, and music videos. This new chapter has been incredibly exciting, and I’m extremely grateful to be here. It feels like my dreams are finally coming true in Hollywood. In LA, I’ve built up a strong body of work, including roles in films such as the thriller “Cruel Love” (directed by Nick Lyon), the psychological drama “Double Exposure” (directed by Howard Goldberg, available on MUBI), and the action-packed “Blow for Blow” (directed by Rigan Machado), which will be released in both U.S. and Brazilian theaters. I’ve also worked on several short films, including “Someone in Me” (directed by Rafaela Goncalves), as well as commercial and music video projects. A major highlight has been collaborating with Victor Sally, a Sony Music artist, on two music videos filmed in Los Angeles in 2024. I played lead roles in both “Blow for Blow” (the theme song for the film) and “Parecia de Cinema”, with Victor recording his debut album in Hollywood.

In March 2025, I’ll be filming again with Rigan Machado on “Machado Brothers against Zombies”. The filming will take place in Texas. I’ve also been invited to play a lead role in “Karma”, Mark Clark’s next feature film, which will also be shot in the U.S. I’m also excited about “Corruption at the Border”, a dramatic thriller that will explore issues surrounding people and drug trafficking.

Salomao Carolline: Hollywood Star with a Flawless Vision

Carolline Salomão is a French Brazilian actress of Syrian Lebanese ancestries, born and raised in Brazil. Later, studied to be a film director in Paris and finally went to drama school in Brazil, graduating in December 2016. She’s fluent in French, Portuguese, English and Spanish. She’s a professional Ballet Dancer, professional Horse Rider, and skilled screen combat actress.

In 2017, she started her acting career and played various roles in series like, “Genevieve”, a French Doctorate in the HBO Brazilian TV series PSI. In “Metropole”, which is also a Tv series, she plays the brilliant ‘Gabriela Mantovani’, an upcoming detective in the São Paulo special forces. In “A Herança”, a tv series as well, she played Pamela Chevalier, a cocaine-addicted socialite from the countryside of São Paulo who drags her best friend, Luciana Reis. In the year 2018, she moved to Madrid and worked in a lot of commercials, with the help of her fluent Spanish. In the same year, she went back and forth to Brazil where she was cast to play a comic role in “Glass” from “M. Night Shyamalan”. At the end of 2018, she signed with a new agent in the UK and has been living here for the past three years, accumulating significant experience and credits.

In the year 2019, she played lead roles in three feature films currently being presented to different networks. In those, she was able to show two very important traits of her acting skills: Comedy and Action, screen combat skills that goes from sword fighting to kickboxing and jiujitsu as well. She also played lead roles in multi-awarded films, available on PRIME VIDEO UK and US. Her acting skills earned her two Best Duo Acting Awards amongst twelve other awards as well. Although 2020 was a different year for all of us, Carolline Salomão never stopped filming, receiving a huge acclamation for her comedy videos on Brazilian YouTube channels with up to 5 million subscribers.

In the year 2021, she played Cindy Fitts in the TV series “What the Fact”, to be distributed soon by Amazon Prime. Her character in the series is a whistleblower doctor who feeds a YouTube celebrity with hard truths about the pharmaceutical industry. The production was awarded a Best Cast Ensemble Award amongst other 5 awards. She is going to work on her next project in January 2022, called “A Beautiful Debt”. This will be her fourth action movie. In this one, she plays an ex-secret service agent who falls in love with the wrong guy. Let us have a look at what she said in an exclusive interview with “Tycoon Global Magazine”.

Q.1 How will you define your personality? How would you define of yourself?

“I’m full of sunny energy. I have a sweet side but also a cheeky one. People say I have a cheeky smile. I like to make people laugh, and I believe this is my mission here on this planet. To uplift people with my energy, a gift given to me by God to share with all people. To make them smile. I’ve been called the Brazilian Sandra Bullock, cause I’m naturally funny, or Julia Roberts because of my big smile. But, on the other side, whenever I have my guard up, I come across as a strong, fearless woman. Which leads many people from the industry to cast me as a police officer or a lawyer, and now, secret service.”

Q.2 What marked your interest in the film industry?

“I had wild dreams when I was little. Then, when the time came to make a career choice, all I wanted was to show the world my visions, fantastic camera angles, and surreal narratives. I would rent 5 different films and spend one or two whole days watching one after the other. From Akira Kurosawa’s “Dreams” to Jean Pierre Jaunet et Caro’s “Delicatessen”. My favourite titles would be registered on the walls of my room. Not posters. I would write them on the walls, driving mom crazy. Finally, but not less important, I must add to that my grandmother. Olga Abrahão Salomão. When I was little, I would sleep at her apartment, and she would always tell me a religious story before I went to bed. Like that, she taught me moral principles but also the taste for storytelling. No one else ever did that to me again. She recently passed away, but I’ll always keep her memory alive. She is and will always be with me until we meet again.”

Q.3 Out of all the characters you have played, which do you think resembles your personality and why?

“So far, Giorgia, the character I played in “The Magnificence of You”, certainly resembles my personality the most. When I met the writer-director, Joel Van Der Molen, we decided we had to work together. As we got to know each other better, it all became clear, and Joel said I had to play Giorgia, a character inspired by a real person. He realized how close our personalities were and decided I was the only one who could possibly portray her. That character allowed many parts of my personality to come out, from my sweet side to anger and disappointment. It was a full circle. The bubbly Carolline and the explosive Carolline. But I have to say, the next thing I’ll be filming this year is also very close to my personality. It’s an action piece that requires a lot of training. I love martial arts and always had the feeling that in a past life, I was probably an Amazon Warrior. This character has a feisty personality, as well as a funny side. Luke J I Smith, owner of the studio we’ll be filming in, who has trained with Jedis from Start Wars to stunts in Aquaman, was the one responsible for perfecting each movement of my fight choreography. He’s amazing.”

Q.4 You know many languages. What role do they play in framing your career?

“Before moving to London, I was living and acting in Madrid. So, the Spanish language opened a new market of possibilities for me. Then I decided that if I wanted a truly international career in cinema, I would have to be in Paris or England. Although I’m half French and speak fluently the language, fate brought me to London when I met my English agent in Paris. I instantly fell in love with London. That said, I still want to break into the Parisian cinema scene.”

Q.5 How were your experiences filming in 2020 with all those restrictions?

“Since I already had experienced Covid and my immunity was extremely high, I was never scared to be on set. But of course, it was a different experience. We had to be mindful of others at all times and always respect the restrictions imposed by law.”

Q.6 What are your expectations from the field you are working in?

“I believe that my field will only grow more and more because of the diversity of possibilities brought by the streaming platforms and the talent agencies expanding their field of expertise, besides the growth of the indie film market. The biggest streaming platforms are now also content producers, so are the talent agencies, going from only managing talent to now producing their writer’s pieces using their talents. During Covid, although production slowed down, I always said: the more people are forced to stay at home, the more content the industry will need to produce to entertain this audience. I don’t want people locked at home, but it gave me hope that my business would always go on. The show must go on, they say, right? At the same time, I believe, personally, that there has never been a better time to be a multi-ethnical actress. Not only because of the “me too” movement but, again, because of the streaming platforms. Now any content on Netflix reaches the four corners of the world, so it means they need leading actors and heroes the audience can identify with. For example, I’m French-Brazilian-Syrian Lebanese. People can never tell where I’m from. They struggle because, truth is, I could be from any of those four nationalities but also Israeli, Greek, American, Canadian, Russian, Italian, and so on.”

Q.7 What or who is your inspiration and why?

“My grandmother and my mother inspired me to always be strong, to always go for it. “Wise people make it happen. They don’t sit around waiting”, mom always says and, “Your only obligation in this world is to be happy”. Grandma’s classical phrase was “this thing of being weak doesn’t work, one must be strong” alongside with “we got to make a little joke, being too serious is boring!”. These strong women always inspired me to be kind but at the same time firm. Taught me that a life without a goal is empty and that a life where we don’t pursue our dreams is not worth living. Also, since I was little, my mom always saw and encouraged my talent for writing, feeding me with loads of books, investing in me so I could speak multiple languages, and excel in different sports. These women inspired me and always will. Then, the first movie that touched my heart on a more profound level was Cinema Paradiso, and I usually say it was the one that made me decide I wanted to be in the film universe. For me, life in itself was too dull, the films were the missing part. They would take me around the world, seeing it through the eyes of different directors from different nationalities.”

Q.8 What will be your advice for the people who are trying to make a name for themselves in the industry?

“I say be positive, be yourself, don’t take it personally. You won’t be able to please everyone anyway, so don’t feel disappointed when you don’t. It only takes a few people to believe in you and to help you grow, so the people that don’t see your talent, the people that disregard you, just are not the right people for you. It’s just the universe or whatever you want to call it, clearing the way for you so you can meet the right people. At the same time, be always open to learning. Take it in what you believe makes sense, but don’t let it harm you if you don’t believe it makes sense. Another thing, you need to be your agent. Getting a great agent is super important, but this industry is about relationships, so you must network and create a net of good people around you to grow together. Go to film events, festivals, write your stuff. Be bold. Be you. If you hide your identity, your true self, you will never succeed in this industry. The more you, the more unique, the more irreplaceable, the more they will want you.”

Natural Talent Essential for Acting: Viktoriya Subbota

“I was born and grew up in Sakhalin which is a Russian island in the Pacific Ocean, north of Japan. My mother a teacher of Russian literature and my father a businessman always encouraged me to pursue my passions, set goals and work hard to achieve them. My grandfather was a bear hunter and Grandma was a great cook”, said Subbotta. “I had a very happy childhood, which involved camping, fishing, and exploring the island in the summer with my parents. Winter was quite different with temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius! I was snowboarding at the age of 13 in perfect powdery white snow five meters deep or I was ice skating on the frozen lake. My love of fashion and movies started very early. Mum would help me with outfits for the production of fashion shows and plays at home, usually around my birthday. These events continued until I was 17 and as you can probably gather I was a very active child and loved to perform.”

“I arrived in Sydney speaking fluent Russian and not much English. I remember ordering one bear on a hot summer day until it was pointed out it was called a beer. If you can imagine moving to Australia not really knowing anyone and trying to learn the language from scratch, you will have an idea of what it was like”, explained Subbota. “I did the usual office jobs while attending NADA, Sydney drama school, and actors pulse classes after work as well as some well-paying modelling assignments.” Subbota went on to say, “whilst learning my scripts for movie parts I now work as a Protection Officer with New South Wales Transport, my rail safety role to ensure the vast array of people who work on the rail networks in NSW don’t get killed by moving trains so it can be quite dangerous…Read on to know more about her journey.

Q: Can you describe what influenced you to pursue a career as an actor?

I have always found the variety and sense of escapism exciting. I joined a school youth theatre group when I was 7 where my first ever role was to play a tree!

It seems funny now but it was exciting.

I was so happy just to be on stage performing in front of all the parents and children. I continued to be involved in theatrical productions but especially when I got to high school. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else so decided to try and pursue a career as an actor.

Q: What do you feel is more important for an actor, talent, or training?

I think they are two questions.

Can someone with no talent be trained and can someone who is talented reach their potential with no training?

I would say sure, you have to be naturally talented however without training you might only see the tip of the iceberg. On the other hand, I’m sure anything is possible.

Q: Which types of acting do you feel you are most suited for?

I have enjoyed some success in front of the camera as a model and I’ve been told the camera loves me. Dramatic, creative with a sense of humor on film as opposed to on stage for now.

Q: How do you rehearse a scene if the other actors you need to interact with within the scene are not available?

Sometimes, I ask my friends and family to step in for the other actors and read their lines or record myself playing the other actors’ parts and then rehearse using the footage.

I can try to memorise mine and the other actor lines. Sort of look at myself in the mirror. I guess this is the most difficult, but usually the most effective way.

Q: Where do you go to practice loud vocal exercises?

It’s not really necessary, as I have a very loud voice in comparison to the size of my body which most people find very hard to believe until they hear me. Mum was always asking me to speak more quietly, as the neighbours could hear me speaking across the street!

I’m probably more focused on facial expressions, movement, and reviving a memory to achieve an emotion for the scene.

Q: How do you react when you receive a negative review about a performance?

Receiving criticism does make me a little bit upset sometimes but for only a short period of time.

I always try to turn the negative into a positive. It’s an opportunity for me to learn more about the basis for their review, what I did wrong, what they liked, and what they feel I could improve on.

I don’t let negative reviews get me down. I use the information in the review to examine my acting methodologies and identify areas I can improve on and become better and stronger.

Q: How do you maintain confidentiality about plot twists and other developments in TV productions before they air?

Although it is sometimes tempting to discuss the productions I am in with my friends and family, I always resist the urge to do so.

I understand the need for confidentiality in our industry, especially if I’m in a production that is serialised or has several plot twists or a surprise ending.

Even when prompted to do this by my friends or industry writers, I avoid the temptation. My motivation is to preserve the integrity of the production for the audience.

Q: What steps do you take to fully understand the importance of your character to the story?

I take time to read the script to understand the character’s background, motivation, how they relate to the other characters in the story, and other items I can use to help me better understand who they are and how I should portray them.

I could have conversations with the director, writers, and other actors as well.

Once I understand the character, I take time to portray them, even while not on the set or in production.

Sometimes, I will assume the character’s traits for days at a time. As an actor, I need to understand everything I can about the character I am portraying.

Q: Who do you consider to be your acting role model whose career you would like to emulate, and why?

Anthony Hopkins.

I think he is an absolutely amazing actor. He can steal the scene without saying a word.

It’s his expression.

Q: What techniques do you use to create a believable character?

I try to put myself in their shoes. I also think about similar situations in my own life that I can draw from which can bring out the emotion or expression to create a believable character.

I actually “live” the character even offset in my own life and really feel it, so that I believe and in turn the character is believable.

International French actor Hafedh Dakhlaoui, born in Tunisia and based out of Sydney, is a powerful combination of global experience crammed into an action-packed, award-winning power performer. At the age of 15, Dakhlaoui participated in ‘Nadia and Sarra’, a French-Tunisian film directed by Moufida Tlatli. By 2020 Dakhlaoui starred in Octopus Pot with Mykel Shannon Jenkins, played the lead role in the movie ‘They called me Keith’ And the role of Walker in ‘The Spy Who Never Dies’, an entirely produced Australian Film produced by Writer, Producer and Director Cory Pearson where he worked alongside Teressa Liane known for her acting in the ‘Vampire Diaries’, ‘Roman Empire’, ‘Badlands’ and the Australian Iconic TV Series’ Neighbours’.

Since 2020 Dakhlaoui has presented himself in more than a few Award-winning productions, such as the web series Flawsome ‘Directed by Australian ‘Claudia Pickering’. Co-Producing ‘They Called Me Keith’ allowed Dakhlaoui to bring his international experience to Australia again, creating more work for talented Sydney Actors. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to spend time on set with Lead Actor Hafedh Dakhlaoui in his latest thriller movie ‘Sayonne’ set in Sydney and directed by Australia’s very own Summer Nicks.

Recently approached by the ‘Trimester’ directors to work in Los Angeles on a thriller movie alongside three American actors, including Shayla Hudson Riggle and Narlyia Sterling, Dakhlaoui convinced the crew to come to Australia to produce it in Sydney, where filming will start soon. Dakhlaoui keeps proving again and again that International actors can make Australia home in a lucrative industry, bouncing high post covid with Australia’s changing landscape and covid-free life — a perfect destination for any international Hollywood Film Director. Dakhlaoui lives in his humble Surry Hills apartment, creating global opportunities for global actors, so keep an eye out for this Hollywood sensation who now calls ‘Australia Home’.

Godzilla vs. Kong Director Adam Wingard in Discussions for Legendary’s Next MonsterVerse Movie

Just as Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong was beginning post production in 2019, the company’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened — and underperformed. The movie, which cost $170 million to make, grossed only $386 million and earned middling reviews (42 percent on Rotten Tomatoes).

The movie, which bowed stateside March 31 to $31.6 million, has crossed $400 million globally. It is the top-grossing Hollywood-produced movie released since the pandemic upended the movie business. And it has yet to open in multiple larger markets, among them the U.K., Brazil and Japan. It also marks the second-best performance in the four-movie MonsterVerse franchise, trailing only Kong: Skull Island’s 2017 tally of $566 million.
